Winning Blackpool South for the second time in two months

Last night Blackpool South has joined constituencies up and down the country in voting for change.

I would like to thank everyone involved in my campaign for their dedicated hard work over the past few weeks. A special thanks goes to my family, in particular my wife, Portia, for her infinite patience throughout two election campaigns this year, and her unwavering support.

And my heartfelt thanks goes to every single person who turned up to the polls yesterday to choose a better future for Blackpool. You have put your faith in me and I won’t let you down.

There are many constituents in Blackpool whose trust I still need to earn. To you I promise to work tirelessly for our town, to restore pride and purpose to Blackpool, and to overcome division by representing our entire community in Westminster.

Our new Labour government has a huge challenge ahead but it is one that we have been preparing to face for the past 14 years.

In that time we have been left behind by a government that has served the interests of the wealthy and powerful elite instead of the ordinary people of Blackpool and the country.

A Labour government will never treat you with indifference or contempt. It will deliver for you and improve your lives.

This government won’t be one of chaotic politics or the reactionary policies of the populist right. It will be one of common sense and practical solutions to the problems we face.

This government will focus on the priorities of working people, bring about economic stability, put the NHS back on its feet and provide better opportunities for people in Blackpool.

Yesterday the politics of equality, integrity and compassion have prevailed over the politics of division.

Yesterday we took the first steps towards building a better Britain and a better Blackpool.
