The NHS needs reforming, not Reform

Imagine you or a loved one needs urgent medical treatment, but instead of receiving care, you’re hit with a bill. How many pensioners do you know who could afford to pay £12,500 for a hip replacement? Under a private healthcare system, people in Blackpool would be blocked from getting the treatment they need.

This is the shocking reality that Reform leader Nigel Farage and some Tories want to bring to our NHS. Over Christmas, Farage revealed his idea to introduce a US-style healthcare system in the UK. And with some Tories calling for their party to form a coalition of chaos with the populist party, we can’t let these outrageous ideas go unchecked.

Make no mistake, if Farage got his way, the days of free treatment at the point of need – introduced by a progressive post-war Labour government – could be over. Instead patients would face a terrifying choice where medical professionals would be forced to check your purse before your pulse.

People in Blackpool understand how hard it can be to make ends meet. Many are working long hours in low paid jobs or relying on pensions to get by. For them treatable health issues could be fatal.

Anyone who doubts the danger of this plan need only look to the US, where Farage and other figures in Reform have been preoccupied by their idol Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Anyone who doubts the danger of this plan need only look to the US, where Farage and other figures in Reform have been preoccupied by their idol Donald Trump’s inauguration. In America millions of people face a reality of financial ruin and poor health outcomes.

The NHS was built on the idea that healthcare is a basic human right. After 14 years of Tory mismanagement, our NHS is broken but we won’t fix it by charging people when they fall ill.

The Labour government is committed to rebuilding our health services, reducing waiting times and ensuring that every patient gets the best care.

As your MP I will fight to ensure our beloved NHS will stay free at the point of use. We are reforming and rebuilding it – bringing down waiting times, recruiting more doctors and nurses and investing in its infrastructure and equipment.

Only this Labour Government will protect the NHS and give patients the care they deserve.
