Speeding drivers held to account
Two speeders were fined last week after I called on police to tackle dangerous driving in Blackpool South.
Since my election in July constituents have been sharing their concerns about dangerous driving in the areas they live.
Many of these complaints concern similar areas and point to a network of roads that are clearly sought out by people wanting to drive at speed, and where people feel they can get away with it.
Squires Gate Lane, Clifton Drive, Amy Johnson Way, Progress Way and others nearby have been repeatedly brought to my attention by residents who are fed up with speeding vehicles posing a threat to their safety.
After raising residents’ concerns with both the police and the council, last week a traffic enforcement operation took place on Squires Gate Lane. In just two hours two drivers were caught speeding and fined.
This is in addition to Lancashire Constabulary’s wider efforts to get tough on anti-social driving. In the same week officers arrested 19 people for drug driving, 26 people for drink driving and 8 people for driving while unfit through drink or drugs. The force also issued 45 warnings for using a vehicle in a manner causing alarm, distress or annoyance, 22 tickets for using a mobile phone while driving and 17 tickets for failing to wear a seatbelt.
The police are sending a clear message to anti social drivers in the area. Dangerous driving will not be tolerated. Those who break the law will be held accountable.
