Investing in End-of-Life Care
I’ve always believed that one of the truest measures of a society is how it cares for people in their most vulnerable moments. For too long, hospices have been underfunded, struggling to provide the level of care that people at the end of their lives deserve. That’s why I’m delighted that the Labour government is making the largest investment in hospice care in a generation.
Here on the Fylde Coast, this means over £200,000 for Trinity Hospice & Palliative Care Services – a vital service that provides comfort and dignity to people with life-limiting conditions. Across the country, hospices will immediately receive £25 million for facility upgrades, with a further £75 million coming in April. This funding will modernise buildings, upgrade technology, and ensure that both patients and their families receive the highest quality care in the most comfortable settings possible.
I know how important these services are to families in our community. Every year, Trinity Hospice supports thousands of local people, providing not just medical care but also emotional and practical support for loved ones. Yet, despite their incredible work, many hospices have faced rising costs and increasing demand, making it harder to invest in the future. That’s why this funding is so crucial – it will allow hospices to refurbish facilities, purchase essential medical equipment, improve IT systems and make vital energy efficiency upgrades.
This is about more than just financial investment – it’s about respect and dignity. When people reach the end of their lives, they should be able to do so with compassion, surrounded by loved ones, in a setting that feels safe and supportive. Our community’s hospices have always gone above and beyond to provide that, and now, with this funding, they’ll be able to do even more.
Labour’s Plan for Change is built on the principle that care should be available where people need it most – in their communities. By strengthening our hospices, we’re ensuring that people receive the right care, at the right time, in the right place.
As your MP, I will continue to stand up for our local health services and fight to make sure that no family is left struggling to access quality end-of-life care. This investment is a huge step forward, but there is always more to be done. I will keep pushing for long-term solutions to ensure that hospices like Trinity have the funding and support they need – not just today, but for years to come.
