D Day commemorations in Blackpool
Today I joined the commemorations for the 80th anniversary of D-Day, remembering the brave British troops who travelled to Normandy to protect and secure our country’s future. Many sacrificed their lives so we could live freely and others returned home to rebuild our country.
My granddad Dougie Webb served in World War II, fighting fascism in Europe and Africa and once guarded Winston Churchill at Chequers. I am fortunate enough that he survived to share with me his first-hand accounts and it’s so important that we keep these stories alive for our own children.
Thank you to Elizabeth Gomm for capturing such a moving service at the Fylde Memorial Arboretum and Community Garden.
In the evening I attended the Shadows in the Sand event – a touching tribute to the heroes of World War II.
Sand art stencils were used to portray life-sized soldiers on the beach and we watched as the images gradually faded with the tide, symbolising our remembrance of these extraordinary individuals.
It was incredible to see so many in the town come out to show their respect. Thanks again to Elizabeth for these great pics.
We will remember them.
